Best HEPA Air Purifier
Bottom line
In our scoring the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty leads at 8.5, ahead of runner-up the Levoit Core 300S, because it pairs a True HEPA filter with a sealed filter path and low annual filter cost. We rank it our top real-HEPA pick.
A real HEPA air purifier uses a genuine particle filter (True HEPA, H13, or H14), not a unit marketed as "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like." This list only includes purifiers that run a real HEPA filter and are not ozone generators, which we do not consider air purifiers at all. In our scoring we reward a sealed filter path, since a leaky housing lets unfiltered air slip past even a good filter. The ranking is our opinion under our rubric, not a statement of objective fact.
How we score: We require a real HEPA filter (True HEPA / H13 / H14) and exclude any ozone generator, then rank what qualifies by our composite score, which weights filtration honesty, sealed construction, room-size accuracy, and total cost of ownership. We score the verified MERV-equivalent filtration and AHAM-context coverage, never a manufacturer's "HEPA-type" marketing label.

FAQ
- What counts as a real HEPA air purifier?
- In our list, a real HEPA purifier uses a genuine True HEPA, H13, or H14 filter. Labels like "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like," or "99 percent HEPA" do not qualify, because they signal a filter that does not meet the HEPA grade. We exclude ozone generators entirely; in our view they are not air purifiers.
- Why does a sealed filter path matter?
- A sealed path forces all the air the fan moves through the HEPA filter rather than around it. We reward sealed construction in our scoring because an unsealed housing can let unfiltered air bypass the filter, which lowers real-world particle capture even when the filter media itself is genuine HEPA.
- Is the most expensive HEPA purifier the best in your ranking?
- Not in our scoring. We rank by composite score, which includes total cost of ownership, so a unit with high upfront price and high annual filter cost can rank below a cheaper one. Our current top pick, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty, is mid-priced, not the most expensive on the list.
