Best Water Filter for Chromium-6

Bottom line

In our scoring, the AquaTru Classic Countertop RO is the best chromium-6 water filter, leading with a 7.5 composite on the strength of its certified reduction across chromium-6, lead, arsenic, PFOA, and PFOS. The Waterdrop G3P800 Tankless RO is our runner-up.

Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) is a contaminant the EPA regulates under its total chromium drinking-water standard, and reverse osmosis is the format most commonly certified to reduce it. This page lists only the filters we found with accredited certification for chromium-6 on an official database - "tested to NSF standards" earns no credit here, because tested-to is not certified. In our scoring, a product has to prove chromium-6 reduction through a real listing, not a marketing claim, to appear at all. We then rank the qualifiers by our composite score.

How we score: We require verifiable accredited certification for chromium-6 reduction on an official database (NSF, WQA, or IAPMO), then rank every qualifying product by its composite score under our rubric.

FAQ

Does a Brita or charcoal pitcher remove chromium-6?
Not reliably. Standard carbon pitchers are generally not certified for chromium-6. On our list, only filters with accredited certification for chromium-6 reduction qualify, and reverse osmosis units dominate. We will not credit a filter for chromium-6 without a verifiable certification on an official database.
Why is chromium-6 a concern in drinking water?
The EPA regulates chromium in drinking water under its total chromium standard, and chromium-6 is the hexavalent form that has drawn the most scrutiny. We describe why the contaminant is regulated; we do not claim any product prevents, treats, or cures a health condition. A certified filter reduces the contaminant - that is what the certification proves.
Is reverse osmosis the best way to reduce chromium-6?
Reverse osmosis is the format most represented among the chromium-6-certified filters we rank, and our top two picks are both RO systems. In our view, an accredited certification for chromium-6 reduction matters more than the format label - we score what the certification proves, not what the box markets.
