Best Water Filter for Well Water

Bottom line

For well water, look for a system with a sediment pre-filter and the contaminant certification your well test calls for - reverse osmosis covers the widest range.

If you're on a private well, start here: the EPA doesn't cover wells, so no utility is testing your water for you - that job is yours. Well water often carries grit and hardness, and sometimes arsenic or nitrates, which is why a sediment pre-filter (a coarse first stage that catches particles) plus the right contaminant certification matters more than it would on city water. The most useful move is to test your well first, then pick the filter that matches what the test actually finds.

How we score: We surface the units that either include a sediment pre-filter or are explicitly rated for well and hard-water sources, then rank them by overall score.

FAQ

Do I need to test my well water first?
Yes - it's the step that saves you from buying the wrong filter. Wells are unregulated, so a certified lab test is the only way to know what's actually in your water. Once you have that, you match the filter's certification to what the test found.
Is reverse osmosis good for well water?
RO handles the broadest range of dissolved contaminants, so it's a strong choice. The catch on a well: pair it with enough sediment pre-filtration, or cloudy water will clog the membrane sooner than it should.
