Best-of guides
Every pick is the engine's ranking under a stated bar. We never list a product that does not meet it.
- Best Water Filter for Lead
Lead removal is the one claim you should never take on marketing alone. We only rank filters NSF/ANSI 53 certified specifically for lead and listed on an official database. A filter 'tested to NSF standards' but not certified does not appear here.
- Best Water Filter for PFAS
PFAS ('forever chemicals') need a filter certified to NSF/ANSI P473, or 53 + 401 covering PFOA and PFOS, or NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis. We rank only units with that certification on an official database.
- Best Water Filter for Well Water
Private wells are not covered by the EPA, so no utility tests them for you. Well water often carries sediment, hardness, and sometimes arsenic or nitrates, so a sediment pre-filter plus contaminant certification matters. Test your well first, then match the filter to what you find.
- Best Reverse Osmosis System
Reverse osmosis filters at the membrane level, covering the widest range of dissolved contaminants. The tradeoffs are wastewater and cost per gallon. We score RO systems on certified reduction, running cost, and how efficiently they use water.
- Best Under-Sink Water Filter
Under-sink carbon filters are the sweet spot for many homes: high capacity, good flow, no countertop clutter, and often broad certification. We rank them by what they are certified to remove and what they cost to run.
- Best Water Filter Pitcher
Pitchers are the cheapest entry point, but certification varies wildly: some are certified only for chlorine taste, others for lead and PFAS. The catch is cost per gallon, since pitcher cartridges are small. We rank on both.
- Best Whole-House Water Filter
Whole-house filters treat every tap, mainly for chlorine, sediment, and taste. A key catch: many are built from NSF-certified media but are not certified as a complete system. We score what the system actually holds.
- Cheapest Water Filter Per Gallon
Sticker price hides the real cost: cartridge price divided by rated gallons. A cheap pitcher with tiny cartridges can cost more per gallon than an under-sink system. We compute cost per gallon for every unit and rank by it here.
- Cheapest Air Purifier to Run
Sticker price is not the cost of an air purifier; filters are. We compute annual filter cost for every unit and rank by it here, restricted to units with a real (not HEPA-type) filter and no ozone.
- Best Air Purifier for Allergies
For allergens you want a true sealed HEPA system (so air cannot bypass the filter) with an AHAM-verified CADR matched to your room, and no ozone. We rank qualifying units by composite score.
- Best Air Purifier for Wildfire Smoke
Wildfire smoke is mostly fine PM2.5. You want a high AHAM-verified smoke CADR for your room, real HEPA plus carbon, and absolutely no ozone. We rank ozone-free HEPA units by composite score; aim for extra CADR during smoke events.
- Best Quiet Air Purifier for Bedrooms
A bedroom purifier has to be quiet enough to sleep through. We surface real-HEPA, ozone-free units that run at or below roughly 30 dBA on their lowest useful speed, then rank by composite score.
- Best Air Purifier With No Ozone and No Ionizer
The cleanest approach is pure mechanical filtration: no ionizer, no plasma, no ozone byproduct. We rank units with no ozone-generating technology at all by composite score.
- Best Air Purifier for Large Rooms
Big rooms need high clean-air delivery, and big rooms are where coverage claims get inflated. We surface large- and whole-room class units and rank by composite, which flags any unit whose room claim its own CADR cannot support.
